Kala pathar means "black rock" in nepali, hindi and urdu language. The place is always fully covered with snow with freezing cold temperature. It is situated above thangu valley and chopta valley. The only colours you will see are black and white. The whole area is covered with white snow and some black rocks. This place is under restricted by indian army and people are allowed to go until a certain place but they need permit to visit this place. The road service to this area is quite bad but the place is eye catching and memorable and its worths visiting. Mostly the tourist visiting gurudongmar lake will visit kalapthar to view the snow. The place is less in altitude as compare to gurudongmar lake so there is no problem for children to visit this place.

Day 1 : GANGTOK - LACHEN (128 KMS / 6-8 HRS)

Pick up from Gangtok hotel at around 9.00 am – 10.30 am [ after permit is created] and transfer to Lachen via Tashi view point, Butterfly or Seven Sister waterfalls [depending on road opened], Mangan Valley [lunch Point], Singhik waterfalls, Naga waterfalls, Toong Check post, Chumthang valley [Tea/Snacks Point]. Reach Lachen by 5 pm. Halt at lachen.

Day 2 : LACHEN - KALAPATHAR - LACHUNG (158 KMS / 10-11 HRS)

Pick up from Lachen hotel at around 6 am and transfer to kalapathar via Thangu valley ( breakfast point). Reach kalapathar by 9 am. Return to Lachen by 2-3 pm. After Lunch transfer to Lachung via Bhim Nala waterfalls. Halt at lachung.

Day 3 : LACHUNG - YUMTHANG VALLEY - GANGTOK (172 KMS / 8-10 HRS)

Pick up from Lachung hotel at around 7.00 am and transfer to Yumthang valley. On the way visit Singhba Rhododendron Sanctuary and Hot Waterspot. Return to Lachung by 12 noon. After Lunch transfer to Gangtok hotel. Reach Gangtok by 6-7 pm. Evening free to visit Gangtok market at your own.
(In case of Land slide or any other reason lachen valley is closed we will provided alternate sightseeing.)

Foreigner : Foreigners are allowed to visit kala pathar with special permit. There should be atleast 2 foreigners to visit Lachen valley. This special permit are provided by Travel Agents in Sikkim, Goverment Authority. Foreigner visiting lachen valley from Gangtok need to produce following documents:
Passport & Visa: 4 copies of Passport and visa is required.
Inner Line Permit (ILP) : 4 copies of ILP is required also required. This ILP is created in sikkim border either in Rangpho or Melli before entering sikkim.
Photo : 4 copies of passport size photo is required.

There are two routes to reach kalapathar :
1. Gangtok to kalapathar via Mangan.
2. Lachung valley to kalapathar via Chumthang valley.

Thangu valley to kalapathar : 22 kms.
